Real Solutions to Stop Gun Violence
In the wake of the Isla Vista mass shooting, Das Williams co-authored California’s ground breaking “red-flag” law – now a national model – to combat the epidemic of gun violence communities across our state and nation continue to grapple with. The Gun Violence Restraining Order (GVRO) allows concerned family members, intimate partners or friends to work with law enforcement and the courts to temporarily remove guns or prevent the purchase of new guns if someone is found to be demonstrating behavior that may indicate they are likely to commit violence against others or themselves.
This critical tool, commonly known as a “red flag” law, gives law enforcement the ability to intervene before tragedy strikes. Since its passage, Santa Barbara County has issued approximately 40 GVROs.
